Does everyone keep telling you that you display all the telltale signs of becoming a successful surgeon? Are you interested in pursuing a career in surgery but can’t decide what to specialize in? with a projected shortage of up to 28,700 surgeons in the US by 2033, the career outlook is quite promising for aspiring surgeons studying at Caribbean medical schools. Here, we have listed some of the most in-demand and lucrative careers in surgery that you can follow.

General Surgery

General surgeons are doctors who specialize in surgical procedures. However, as opposed to other surgical specialties in our list, a general surgeon does not specialize in any one organ or part of the body but rather possesses the acumen and skills to deal with a wide array of surgical conditions.  General surgeons usually work with a team of medical professionals, including an anesthesiologist, nurses, and surgical technicians, overseeing the medical and surgical care of patients.

The responsibilities of a general surgeon involve examining patients and making diagnoses, reviewing patients’ medical history to determine the best procedure for treatment, preparing patients for surgery, performing standard surgeries and procedures (such as hernia repair, cholecystectomy, abscess drainage, endoscopy, colonoscopy, appendectomy, small bowel obstruction, and colon surgery), ensuring sterility in the operating room, and providing post-operation care, ensuring that there are no complications from the surgery.

The average salary of a surgeon is $283,603 per year.

Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric Surgery deals with the diagnosis, treatment and surgical care of children, right from newborns to adolescents up to the age of 18 years. A pediatric surgeon is responsible for the detection and correction of fetal abnormalities, repair of birth defects, treatment of injuries in children and adolescents, performing a range of surgical procedures, as well as providing operative care for a variety of illnesses, diseases, and health conditions in young patients.

A pediatric surgeon also deals with the diagnosis and surgical care of cancers, including removal of tumors from the chest, abdomen, skin/fat, testicles and ovaries, performing transplantation operations and endoscopic procedures, and surgical and non-operative management of serious injuries. As a pediatric surgeon, you will also have to comfort young patients before operation, prescribe medication to treat pain and infection after surgery, and collaborate with the child’s parents, family doctor and all the specialists involved in a child’s medical care to determine the best course of action for your patient. If you are dedicated, caring, calm, compassionate and good with children, with strong communication and interpersonal skills, this path is perfect for you.

The average salary of a Pediatric surgeon is $300,279 per year.
